Fake it

Several times in the past few weeks I’ve heard people refer to, “Fake it ’till you make it” as a career/romance/life strategy. That’s an idea I never really grew up with, or saw in college. At least not explicitly defined. Largely because there’s much point trying to fake it in an academic setting–people that know better than you will all too happily slap you down for being loud and ignorant.

But there are many  social tactics/strategies it’s taken me a long time to appreciate. The importance of first impressions, flirting with someone you don’t like to make the person you do like jealous, inter-group vs. intra-group politics, etc..

So is the idea of faking it another basic strategy that just never occurred to me because it’s so…well… disingenuous? Or is it a stupid idea that only stupid people promulgate?
