There are many days that I miss Bush and Cheney. This whole governance thing when you’ve got a bunch of coked up squirrels in Congress is more than a wee-bit frustrating. Bush and Cheney were always there for liberals, doing things both stupid and beyond the pale, and making it easy to know what was right: stop whatever sins against everything under the sun they had planned for that day, week, month, congressional session, whatever.
And Palin never really did cut it. Too clueless to find loathsome.
But Newt’s been in the news a bit in the past few months, and I have to give the guy credit, he’s got it where it counts. Hypocrisy, blatant chutzpah, the good-ol’ Clinton hating groove. He makes Mitt Romney look like the pathetic joke he is when it comes to outright foulness in the political sphere. Makes me sad I missed his best work during the 90’s, but ever so glad I never had to attempt to appreciate his best work through the subpar media filters of those dark times.
You really have to admit, though, it’s unclear that the Republicans will be able to field a good all-star cast of Mayberry Machiavellis in the next election cycle. All their best seem like they got their training during the Clinton years, and the pool of talent has thinned out since then. It’s a crying shame.
