Random Thoughts…

…from talking to my roommate.

The first is whether it’s possible to measure levels of happiness in any way? My roommate thought it was interesting that, based on survey data, people all seemed to have similar levels of happiness regardless of the particulars of their lives. I thought those surveys were a load of crap because happiness can’t be boiled down to one number, and there’s no telling what someone means by their response to such a survey question.

The second is whether polling reflects or creates reality. This really is a useless semantic exercise, but I’m still curious. I know that politicians and political junkies think polls reflect some reality of what people believe. on the other hand, I think it might be better to say the polling creates the reality in which the politicians and political junkies live. It’s unclear to me that the polling reflects anything truly real.

What say you, loyal readers?
